The Inclusive Governance Pledge: Act Now

George Floyd's death on May 25, 2020, sparked widespread activities and movements. These activities were largely aimed at addressing systemic racism, police brutality, and social injustice.

Mass protests erupted not only across the United States but also in countries worldwide, including the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Australia. Demonstrators chanted "Black Lives Matter" and called for justice for George Floyd and other victims of police violence. Corporations, nonprofits, and universities issued statements condemning racism and pledged financial support to racial justice organisations. Many organisations reviewed their diversity and inclusion policies, aiming to address systemic inequities within their structures.

Progress on Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) across organisations in the UK has been a focus in recent years since, with a mix of advancements and ongoing challenges. Some organisations now integrate EDI into their activities, with senior leadership often championing these initiatives. However, although progress is being made in some areas, it is very slow and often piecemeal. Representation gaps still remain. Progress particularly in increasing representation of ethnic minorities and disabled individuals in leadership roles remains slow. Pay disparities persist, with women, disabled people and minority groups often earning less. There is also a great divide that exists between larger organisations that often lead in EDI practices, and smaller organisations which lack the resources to implement similar initiatives.

While the charity sector has made strides in promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion, sustained efforts are required to overcome challenges. Continued focus on measurable outcomes, sector-wide collaboration, and cultural change will be critical for long-term progress. At better Governance, we are calling on charities to sign our Inclusive Governance Pledge, to help improve inclusivity in the charity sector. The Inclusive Governance Pledge represents a commitment to fostering equity, participation, and representation in the charity sector. It emphasises the importance of ensuring that meaningful progress is made, through the integration of EDI objectives into the core strategy of each charity and the regular review of published targets. The Inclusive Governance Pledge is a simple and practical call to action, for boards to commit to making Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) a strategic priority.
